Korean Fried Chicken

Whenever my friends and I walk around Koreatown, we almost always have Korean Fried Chicken. I’m always skeptical about Asian chicken dishes (FYI- I’m Asian), mainly because I’ve had Asian chicken dishes ever since I was born and got sick of the flavours quickly.

My first time eating Korean Fried Chicken, I was immediately impressed. It was a nice crunch and the sauce tasted amazing. The sauce had a sweet and tangy taste – almost like sweet and sour sauce but better, if that makes any sense.

Being a foodie, most of the videos I watch on YouTube, or channels that I subscribe to, are food related. I came across Maangchi a year or two ago and found out that she had a recipe for Korean Fried Chicken.

I’ve watched Maangchi’s video on Korean Fried Chicken numerous times, drooling and craving each time I watched it. I had been waiting for a time to make Korean Fried Chicken, so with my mom away, this was the perfect opportunity.

Maangchi actually has two recipes for Korean Fried Chicken, but I decided to make the easier and more crispy version. Here’s the link to her recipe.

These are the ingredients that her recipe calls for:

  • 3½ pounds chicken wings (about 1.6 kg), washed and drained
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon minced ginger
  • 2/3 cup potato starch or corn starch
  • 1/3 cup peanuts (optional)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 to 4 large dried red chili peppers, seeded, cut crosswise into ⅓ inch pieces (optional)
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup rice syrup or corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • Grapeseed oil (or vegetable oil, peanut oil)

All the optional items, I didn’t use (less mess!). Also, I used corn starch, corn syrup, and vegetable oil. I didn’t have white vinegar as well but because I needed only 1 tablespoon, I found out that lemon juice can be a substitute. I’m assuming the vinegar is to give the sauce that tang.

I won’t go into detail about every step – you can check out Maangchi’s site for that – but here are photos to illustrate what I did.

The chicken was definitely crispy and crunchy. The sauce was a bit salty and that’s because I made a mistake of adding Maggi as my soy sauce (My bad!). Although, it definitely needed the red peppers to give that little punch of flavour. But, since this was my first time making it, it wasn’t all that bad. Now I know what to improve on and make this my next go-to dish (Time to retire the Tortellini Bake!).

If you’ve ever made Korean Fried Chicken, let me know what you’ve done that’s different. I would love to see the different kinds of spices and flavours used to make this dish.

And if you love Korean food, subscribe to Maangchi’s channel – you won’t be disappointed!

These look good. What was the reason why you used drumsticks instead of wings? Do they take a bit longer to cook as they are bigger?

I just prefer eating drumsticks over wings. Since the recipe asked to fry it twice, it was about 25 minutes of frying in total.

Whiskey away to a colder climate, please! 🍧
⠀
The summer heat is why one reason I can't stand this season but having @kekougelato makes it bearable!
⠀
Yesterday I got a scoop of Whiskey Green Tea on top of a scoop of Durian. The Whiskey Green Tea holds more whiskey than green tea but eventually the taste of the whiskey starts to fade when you continue to eat it. And the green tea provides an almost Earthy element to the combo. When I combine that with the Durian, the Durian packs a much stronger flavour than the Whiskey Green Tea but both are still good flavours to get.
⠀
Thank you again @alt.aria for your complimentary double scoop! 💙

(Free) Food will always have a pizza my heart 🍕
⠀
To celebrate the grand opening of their Oakville location, @blazepizza is giving away free pizzas today from 11 AM to 10 PM! All you have to do is download the Blaze Pizza app and go line up for the free pizza! It's that simple! You can choose from one of their Signature pizzas or Build Your Own (1-2 toppings).
⠀
I've been meaning to check out Blaze Pizza in Toronto but always forgot to and since I'm closer to Oakville, today's grand opening was the perfect way for me to try it! I got the Art Lover signature pizza (swipe ⏩), which has artichokes, ricotta, mozzarella, garlic, and dollups of tomato sauce. I also added some oregano. The pizza is thin (which I prefer), and though it doesn't look like much on the Art Lover one, it actually packs a lot of flavour.
(The other pizza pictured is the Meat Eater.)
⠀
What's your go-to pizza topping?
🍕🔥

Even in the summer heat, staying cool is popsicle 🍦
⠀
Another year of going to the Burlington Food Truck Festival! If it wasn't so hot today, definitely could have enjoyed the festival more.
⠀
1- Lime Mojito paleta from @wrestlers_to ($5)
2- Curry Fish Balls from @hk_food_station ($6 for 8)
3- Egg Waffles from @hk_food_station
4- Carne Mechada from @theareparepublic ($13)
⠀
The Lime Mojito paleta was the best thing I ate, followed by the Curry Fish Balls. The Egg Waffle was burnt a bit, so it was like a crispy Egg Waffle cracker. The Carne Mechada was my least favourite. While it was a lot of meat, it was tough and semi-dry.
⠀
What food festivals are you hitting up this summer?

It's more metal to suck balls without using a plastic straw 🤟
⠀
I love bubble tea and the amount of it I've been drinking made me realize how much more plastic waste I've been contributing. So recently I've made the switch to using metal straws.
⠀
While I might have to carry my straws with me and clean them myself, to save the Earth and reduce the effects of climate change, I'm willing to do it.
⠀
Earth is not just for our generation but for our future kids' generation and their kids. It is our job to make sure the Earth is still alive and kicking for them 🌎

I'm back! Nice to meat you all again 🍝
⠀
I've been MIA because of my phone. My almost 5-year old Sony Xperia Z3 bootlooped twice and I had to factor reset it, wiping everything, and I didn't get to back up all the internal data. Then my phone also corrupted a microSD card with new food photos I had, so I lost those too.
⠀
So I've been looking for a new phone, and now after 11 years of being with Sony-branded phones, I'm now part of #TeamPixel ✌️
