Recipe: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

The Super Bowl was this past Sunday and I threw a “party” for it. Last year I ordered pizza, wings, and made nachos for myself (Yes, I was having a Super Bowl party myself).  This year I decided to attempt to make pulled pork. I’ve never made it before nor do I have a grill. Luckily my house has a slow cooker and I knew of recipes that used a slow cooker.

I went searching through Pinterest and looked at all the easy pulled pork recipes. I gathered a general idea of what to throw in and the kind of pork to use.

Since I’ve never made it before, I did a tester run before the Super Bowl. In the tester, I used the following:

  • 1/3 of a pork loin (boneless)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1/2 to 2/3 cup of root beer (I used Mug Root Beer)
  • 1/2 to 2/3 cup BBQ sauce (I used Bull’s-Eye Guinness BBQ sauce)
  • 1 onion (chopped into 4 chunks)



When it came to the Super Bowl, I changed it up a bit as I was feeding more people. This is what I used:

  • 2/3 of a pork loin (boneless)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of pepper
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 2/3 cup of Dr. Pepper
  • 2/3 cup BBQ sauce (I used Diana®‘s Western Smokehouse)
  • 1 onion (chopped into 4 or 8 chunks)
  • chopped carrots


To make the pulled pork, here’s what I did:

  1. Take the pork loin and create a dry rub with the salt, pepper, and garlic. Then chop the onion into 4 cloves.pulledpork
  2. Place the onion chunks at the bottom of the slow cooker, going around the circumference of it. If you have more than one piece of pork loin and they’re stacked, place the onions at the bottom of the slow cooker and on top of the stacked pork loin pieces. You want the onion  Then throw in the carrots (They don’t need to be placed in a certain way). pulled porkpulled pork
  3. Plop the pork loin into the slow cooker and pour the BBQ sauce on top of the pork loin and also mix it into the root beer/Dr.Pepper. pulled pork
  4. Set the slow cooker on low and wait 6-8 hours.
  5. After 6-8 hours, you’ll see juice from the pork loin seep out into the soda and BBQ mixture. Take out the pork loin and start shredding it with a fork. You can use your hands or any other utensils. pulled porkpulled pork
  6. Pour out the meat juice from the slow cooker. You can keep this and re-use it for something else.
  7. Take the shredded pork and place it back into the empty slow cooker. Add in your desired amount of BBQ sauce and mix thoroughly. pulled pork
  8. Set the slow cooker back to low for about 40 minutes to an hour.
  9. Once the hour has passed, take out your pulled pork and eat! 😀

I never realized how simple it was until I made it and now I’ve done it twice! Easy peasy. Below is what I did for the Super Bowl. Made nachos and Pulled Pork sandwiches using hot dog buns (the cheapest!). Since the NBA All-Star Weekend is this coming weekend, this would be a good party food choice 😉

Almond gosh! Another pumpkin spice thing?! 🎃
It's not new but I recently tried @traderjoes' Pumpkin Spice Almond Beverage. It's vegan, gluten-free, soy free, and lactose and dairy free.
To be honest, the only pumpkin spice thing I've tried is the drink from Starbucks and I rarely go to Starbucks. This has a strong cinnamon punch. If anything, it should be called 'Cinnamon Almond Beverage' because that's all I taste.
It's not too sweet. It's got a creamy feel and is slightly smooth. You can definitely see the spices in the drink. It's not the greatest but not the worst. It actually grows on you.

Would I repurchase it? Nah. I'll stick to the traditional almond drinks.

Had the Chocolate Caramel Cake from @ikeacanada at the end of September. Very rich and definitely hits that sweet tooth! While I've been vegetarian for a bit over a month now, that doesn't mean I can't eat delicious foods. The stigma against vegetarian/vegan food is ridiculous. I've been vegan in the past and I've had just as good vegan/vegetarian food as meat-containing products. If you know how flavours work, then you know how to make something delicious.
Also- I'm not shaming people for eating meat. But, with climate change, it's best if we all eat meat a little less. The carbon footprint in the meat industry is a great one and we all can do our part. Have Meatless Mondays, or make it a habit to make at least one meatless meal a day.
Climate change is natural phenomenon. It will happen and has happened before. BUT, it's the rate that it is occurring at which is the problem. Humans and other species on this Earth will not survive—the Earth will and adapt. So, let's try and keep the Earth habitable for all the babies and their future kids, and all the other species.

There's nothing fishy about these golden filets 🐟
Before I went vegetarian, I RARELY ate fish. The main fishes I ate were tuna and eel. But I've had fish and chips before, so I know what to compare when trying out the @garden Golden Filets.
Maybe because of the grease, it really gave off that fishy, seafood smell I've encountered with fish and chips here. But after a while, it subsided and I was able to enjoy it. The soy taste isn't as prominent in this as other Gardein products but you can still see that because of it, the texture isn't the same. However, it is a good alternative for new vegans/vegetarians that cut out fish.
