Spicy Korean Noodle Challenge

After months of watching numerous “Spicy Korean Noodle Challenge” videos, I’ve finally tried the challenge myself! I enlisted some of my family to participate with me. (I bet they regret that decision.)

If you’re unfamiliar with the Spicy Korean Noodle Challenge, it is a ramen noodle challenge based on the *third* spiciest instant ramen noodle. The noodle is from Samyang Food and it’s called, ‘Buldak Bokkeum Myun’. It essentially translates to “Fire Chicken Noodle.” There are variations to it but I’ve kept it simple: Take as long as you need to finish the bowl of noodles WITHOUT the aid of any liquids or other foods.

WARNING: If you plan on doing this challenge and normally do not eat spicy foods, please take your time while eating it and/or reconsider performing the challenge. You can develop nausea, stomach pains, or faint from eating foods that are too spicy.

The noodles are in fact extremely spicy. I had an intense burning sensation at the back of my mouth, my tongue, and it travelled to my ears! I’m not used to eating spicy foods, so I knew the pain would be greater for myself. I’ve been recently trying to eat more spicy foods to build my tolerance level.

I will say that the noodles are tasty. You can instantly smell the spice before taking your first bite, but when you do, the noodles are sweet, like sweet and sour sweet, but then the spiciness kicks in. Being the third spiciest instant ramen noodle in the world, it is no surprise that the spiciness kicks in almost immediately. It’s as if the beginning sweet taste is just a tease.

Even though I suffered (but successfully completed the challenge!), I quite liked the noodles. I will consider eating them a second time BUT with other foods. I’ve heard that it pairs nicely with egg and cheese (yes, cheese!). Maybe I will try those to complement it and hopefully they’ll tone down the spiciness.

If you do want to try the challenge yourself, you can purchase the noodle packages at any local Korean/Asian supermarkets. I know that T&T Supermarket in Ontario, Canada sells them (Thanks for the find, Susan!). I actually got mine from Hong Kong – my mom went there recently and I told her to look for them. You can also buy them on Amazon.

Honestly, I didn’t expect the noodles to be THAT spicy but they are. I successfully finished the challenge and I don’t think I’ll try the next two spiciest instant ramen noodles.

If you’ve already done this challenge and have a video up, link it the comments below – I’d love to watch it!

Until next post 🙂
